the biggest sigh of relief ever

Ever since I was 17 weeks along we knew that little Em would have heart problems. Davy had serious health problems as a baby, too, so we've been being prepared for this for a while. Still, everything happened so fast. Here's the short version:

Emily had not gained any weight for a while and she had a persistent cough, so I took her in to the doctor on Thursday (9.1.11) morning up at Primary Childrens' Hospital and they kept her.

Her heart and liver were enlarged. She was in heart failure so they admitted her and put her on the schedule for surgery the next morning. They determined that not only did she need a pacemaker, but that she also needed open heart surgery to repair her ASD.

The surgery took 5 1/2 hours. The doctors and nurses that took care of her were AWESOME. Poor Em had a breathing tube, 2 IVs: one in her hand and one in her ankle, 1 central line in her neck, 1 arterial line in her wrist, several external heart leads in her chest, a catheter and a chest tube (don't mention the chest tube to Jason or he'll pass out).

Thanks to our merciful Heavenly Father and the prayers and fasting of our family, ward and friends, Emily is doing really well! She was able to start eating again on Saturday morning and breathing on her own on Sunday. They sent her home on Monday. So, the whole thing was over in 5 days!

Our hearts still feel pretty broken. We basically just wanted to die when she woke up and looked up at us with all that pain in her eyes and she tried to reach for us to hold her. She's so brave and we are so in love with her!

Interestingly enough, while repairing her heart, her surgeon noticed that she has 2 left sides of her heart and 2 left lungs. So, it turns out that she doesn't have Sick Sinus Syndrome. She has Heterotaxy Syndrome. Upon further investigation they realized that her spleen is non-functional. They'll have to check out the rest of her abdominal organs to make sure everything else is OK. Pretty crazy, huh?

Well, she'll need a new pacemaker surgery in 3-4 years. For now we are so happy to have our precious baby home with us! Thank you to everyone for your messages and calls and prayers. We love you all so much! We know that she is a miracle and consider ourselves very, very blessed!

In our neighborhood there are 4 parks. The small park, the big park, the tan park and the green park. Davy and I have many misunderstandings as to which is which. Tantrums ensue.

Jason and I were so proud of ourselves for letting Davy play with the styrofoam. We were trying not to worry about the mess and just have fun and snap a couple cute pix. The next thing we knew one of these two was no where to be found. oops! Good thing we rescued her before she realized what was going on. :)

No more cars or trucks please. As you can see, what Davy really needs is a parking garage.

Emily Jane rolled over from her tummy to her back yesterday! I was so excited. She did it three times and I filmed it and everything. Well, she did it once. I got out the camera hoping she'd do it again. She did it a second time, but to my horror I looked down to find the camera on Pause. Then, she did it a 3rd time, and I recorded it. She's so sweet. We just can't get enough of her. We kiss her face all day long.

Yummy brownie batter. I shared. Aren't I nice? It was a real sacrifice. :) Doesn't Davy look just like Jason? It's crazy. He acts just like him, too. Davy is obsessed with his Dad. He names all of his stuffed animals, "Dad" or "Daddy caterpillar" or "Daddy dinosaur."

Davy also likes his little sister a lot. . .

This reminded me so much of Scuttle on The Little Mermaid.

Hi Davy and Emily Fans,

Today (Wednesday, February 9, 2011) was a blessed day. Emily got to come home to us, so we're finally all together as a family. And it is bliss. In the words of my pal, Fred Connors, "God is good."

Emily's PDA is nearly closed and it hasn't seemed to affect her, so her heart docs set her free. She might have to have it surgically repaired later on, if it causes her trouble, but for now she's great. The same goes for her slow heart rate. She's doing fine now, but more than likely, she'll need a pacemaker, just like her old man. Ah, heredity. Those Punnett squares are still bustin' my chops...

Anyway, thank you all for your love and prayers. We hope you enjoy our little homecoming reception below.

Hi,

Even though we're not huge football fans, Emily was pretty ticked off that the Steelers lost the Superbowl last night.

Otherwise, she's doing just fine. We're still waiting for that PDA to close, so we can determine whether she needs heart surgery.

In the meantime, she's eating very well. We're grateful for all the prayers, love and support you've all been giving us. Sorry we're not available to talk on the phone very much; the NICU doesn't permit us to use cell phones. But we're wired now, so you're welcome to e-mail us.

Update on Emily

Hi Family and Friends,

Most of you have probably heard that Emily is having some trouble after all. She has a slower heart rate (like mine), which she has been tolerating well. But she also may have that same coarctation of the aorta problem that Davy had. This is a narrowing of her aorta that would have to be repaired via surgery. So, she was transferred to another hospital where this problem can be addressed, if need be. Right now, we have to wait and see if she's going to need surgery.

The other tough news is that her slow heart rate is probably the result of the same heart disease that I have, which means she'll probably also need a pacemaker within the first few years of her life. (Speaking from experience, this is hard when you're a kid but no big deal once you're an adult.)

In short, we still feel very blessed and grateful. We know she's going to be just fine; we just have to get through this trying time. And we will.

Introducing Emily Jane Pyles

Hi Davy (and now Emily) fans!

The Pyles family has a new addition: Emily Jane Pyles. She was born today, February 3, 2011, at 1:26 p.m. She weighs 6 lbs. exactly. She is 19 inches long and looks like her big brother, Davy. Both Mom and baby are doing well.

We feel so blessed that Natalie was able to carry her to term. She still has a slow heart rate, but thus far, the docs say she's doing really well. They're not exactly sure yet why she has a slow rate, but she may need a pacemaker someday like her Dad. (You always end up passing the good stuff down to your kids, don't ya?)

Anyway, we just feel very blessed to have her in our lives. We loved her before she was even born. Davy loves her, too. When he met her, he stared at her with fascination and said, "Ahhhhh, she's such a little baby. Hi, Emily." Thousands more photos will follow, but I've thrown a couple on this blog tonight, so everyone can see her.

A note about the photos below: I don't want any grief (please) about there not being any pictures of Natalie (because the only times she held her today was during feeding, so a photo shoot was unseemly, in our opinion). Also, when Davy held her, we were all "helping" him. But we'll get some photos of the siblings soon. (Oh, and Natalie isn't in the wedding photos below because she really only posed for the photographer's photos. She was bashful about her cute baby belly.)

Davy turned 3 on January 13, 2011. He's such a big boy now. We got him a bike ("Firetube Jr.") and a shark helmet. We had his birthday party on Saturday at Incredible Pizza in Draper. Davy's been adjusting to the new house pretty well. There's only one thing he's a little leery about... when we first got here the smoke detector batteries needed to be replaced and the chirping noise really freaked him out. We spent the whole day talking to him about smoke alarms and how they're nice and happy and quiet now that they have new batteries. Now, he points them out to us constantly and says, "I don't have to be afraid with that smoke alarm." I love the way he gets prepositions mixed up. :)

Saying Goodbye to Our Aunt Darlene

Early this morning, around 2 a.m., we had to say goodbye to our Aunt Darlene. She was 58 years old. Darlene has been uncomfortably ill for quite some time now, so it's one of those bittersweet instances where this shady cloud has a silver lining.

Most people who visit this Web site probably didn't have the opportunity to know her, but anyone who knew her can tell you, she loved animals, kids, Elvis, cooking and feeding guests, visiting with people, hosting parties, Trans Ams, taking care of sick people, flower-arranging and "making baskets," living on "The Farm" out in the country, the movie "An Affair to Remember," family reunions, her grandkids and her friends and family.

Anybody that knew Darlene knew she was feisty, given to state her opinion openly and quite clearly. But at the same time, she was tender-hearted and compassionate, with an uncanny ability to see the underdog's perspective. Perhaps because she herself often felt like an underdog most of her life. I've always admired her ability to empathize.

My Aunt Darlene loved the Lord, and I believe she is close to Him in a special way. She has always loved me — and has always let me know it. I'm so thankful to have had her in my life.

Last evening, as we prayed at the dinner table, I included Darlene in my prayer. Afterward, Davy said, "Aunt Darlene, I love you." Then he continued to repeat that phrase every once in a while for the rest of the night. I explained to him that she was sick and was going to live with Jesus. He passed that information on to his mom.

It's impossible to summarize a person's life or to appropriately pay tribute through mere words. It's equally difficult to say goodbye, even when you have known for a long time that the departure is nearing. But I think little Davy said it best, and I echo his sentiments: Aunt Darlene, I love you.

You will be sadly missed by so, so many...

Wedding Bells and a New Film Podcast

Hi Davy fans,

Hope you'll forgive these non-Davy-related personal notes, but big things are afoot in our family. Davy's grandma ("Maws") is getting married to a wonderful guy in July. We are so happy for them. Davy and The Dad will be flying home to West Virginia for the wedding.

Also, along with two of my best pals, Bill Barnes and Andy Howell, I've put together a film podcast called Considering the Sequels. It's a monthly film program (much like an online talk-radio show) that examines the merits and weaknesses of specific movie franchises. In Episode 1 we consider the "Back to the Future" trilogy.

Andy, Bill and I host the show. We three and a varying special guest review the individual installments of the franchise in story order to collectively determine whether each sequel is a worthy continuation of the primary film — or if it’s a just another instance of cinematic dead horse beating.

Each episode also features a concept discussion, where we talk about matters pertaining to sequels or the cinema, in general. These discussions are often spawned by listening to excerpts from pre-recorded interviews with various sorts of experts. We also discuss new releases and whatever else we’ve watched recently.

Davy Meets "Pie-Lar Man"

Yesterday I gave Davy one of my prized action figures from my youth — Spider-Man, whom he refers to as "Pie-Lar Man." He even sings the traditional Spider-Man theme song, which he knows from all his Spider-Baby exploits. Oh, and he correctly identified that Spider-Man is wearing jammies.

New Davy Stories

Hi Davy fans,

It's The Dad. Here are a few Davy stories to accompany our new masthead. (That giant lollipop is one of two that he receive in the mail from his Maws.)

— He's such a picky eater these days, today for lunch he would only eat olives, pickles, tortilla chips and animal crackers, all together in a bowl.

— He's kind of in a cave man mode when it comes to communicating: When he wakes up in the morning, he no longer says "Bite!" ... Now he just says, "EAT!"

— Davy loves to hold Natalie's cell phone up to his ear and say, "Hey, Jas!"

— And all the time he'll say words that I didn't realize that he knows. This evening I finished a milk jug and he observed, "Empty."

— He likes my hair gel. Today he played with the bottle for an hour. Not hyperbole. He'd try to stick his little finger in the tiny hole and smear gel in his hair and his mom's.

— Also, he kept attacking my deodorant with my hair brush. = Baby Brain.

— He saw dogs playing with each other yesterday (yes, just playing), and he told them to "Be nice!"

— And he loves to water Natalie's plants on our back porch.

Hi Everyone!

Here are some new davy pictures. He sure keeps us busy and smiling these days. The other day he walked into the bathroom where I was getting ready and gently stomped on my foot and said, "sorry." He just kept doing it, stomping on my foot and saying, "sorry" over and over again.

It's amazing how much he can understand. He went to visit his great-grandma last week. She just casually mentioned to my mom that he could have a particular barney toy because her other great-grandson wasn't into it. When my mom said it was time to go, he tucked is jacket under one arm and the barney toy under the other and said, "bye, bye." No matter how smart we think he is, we can't deny that he is having a little bit of trouble with counting. The concept of "one" still evades him. He counts, "two, three, two, three, four, five."

He loves to sing in church and he waves his arm around just like the chorister. Staying reverent in Sacrament meeting is kind of tough. He calls out for "kids!" (which is what he calls nursery, even though he's the only 'kid' in there most weeks) pretty much the whole time. :)

So, we are pretty much settled into our new life back in Utah. Natalie manages two apartment complexes and Jason will be starting his new job next week! Oh, and we gave Davy a haircut, so we'll try to post some new pictures soon!

Davy loved Trick or Treating so much on the 29th that we thought we'd take him out again. He was really shy, though. We're not sure why, but he was definitely 'over it'. :)

Davy's Mom and Dad's Trick or Treat Method: Put the Elmo hood up. Say "Trick or Treat." = Results: 1 piece of candy.

Davy's Charming Trick or Treat Method: Act clueless and lost. Tear the Elmo hood off. Look somewhat sad and distant. Stare blankly into the porch lights. Return the smallest piece of candy back to the giver as an act of sharing. = Results: 6 pieces of candy.

When Davy says "Trick or Treat," it sounds like this: "Dig Dig Digt."

morning-after postscript: So, the next morning, the day after trick or treating, Davy was up at 5:40 a.m. with his shoes (pronounced "eeewwws") in his hand, leading The Dad to the door by his finger, saying "Out!" He wanted to go trick or treating some more — at 5:40!

I was almost done putting away the ingredients for apple cinnamon bread when I looked down to see what that pounding noise was. Oh, it was just Davy getting every last spec of cinnamon out of the container...

and onto the floor. Here he is saying "No, no" and then...

here he is fleeing the scene. You can see the marker he's drawn on the floor, too. Guess this is Davy's favorite place to get into trouble. :)

Happier times... This is probably the last picture we'll see of Davy in shorts for a while.

Davy's mom finally came home from Spain this evening. It was a well-deserved vacation for Natalie, but these two really missed each other. When Davy saw her, he was quiet, but he said, "Eyes!" as he pointed at her eyes. She held and squeezed him for a long time, and he was just uncharacteristically still and loving it. He snuggled her quite a bit (also uncharacteristic of Davy).

Nat sat in the back seat with him on the way home from the airport, and Davy giggled much of the way. It does my heart good to see them together again; it's just not right when they're apart. Stay tuned over the next couple of days for some highlight photos from Spain.

This little number is from earlier today, kind of like a before and after shot. This blog has been kind to Davy, only featuring his most smiley moments. Sometimes he can be a grumpy pants, too. This is one such occasion, after this afternoon's nap, a mood that was only remedied by "nanas" and bath time — and then ultimately, his mama.

Here is our tech-savvy baby playing with a portable CD player. If only his parents were tech-savvy, he'd be playing with an iPhone, or the like. This post was meant to go up yesterday, but alas, solo baby duty is taxing (albeit rewarding). Nata finally comes home to us today. I can't wait to see his reaction when he sees her. We've had a fun time together, just us boys, but we miss The Mom.

For brunch this morning Davy enjoyed sliced "NANAS!" blueberries and strawberries. Oh, and he also had some nice blend of orange-pineapple-banana juice. (Do bananas really have any juice?) On his tray he's also playing with a fake Jell-O box and a toy boat, which Davy calls "bitt," naturally. This little strapped-in set-up is the only way Dad can get a shower into the daily routine. It kept Davison content for about 15 minutes.

Grandma Karen & "Dee-Dee"

Today Davy's Grandma Karen flew back home to Salt Lake City after a very nice visit. She was our special, in-house babysitter while Nat was in Spain and I was at work. Natalie and I are extremely grateful for her able assistance.

Nat, this is the picture in that book that Davy recognized as an instance of "nigh-nigh." That's what he said. We wondered how he could glean nigh-nigh from this photo. Perhaps it's the teddy bear, which we always give him for his nigh-nighs.

This is Davis (and his Dad) playing with one of his favorite toys. He loves the little green car inside.
